Ticket Transfer Guide
Overview
Sometimes plans change. If you bought a ticket but can no longer go to the event, or you have extra purchased tickets, you can transfer a ticket to someone else. This guide explains everything you need to know to do that, step by step, in plain language.
There are 3 ways to transfer a ticket
The options you see depend on how the event organizers have set things up. Here is a quick look at all three:
Free Transfer
Give your ticket to a friend, no money changes hands on Volunteeripate. You enter their email address and send the offer. They accept it for free.
Paid Transfer
Send your ticket to a specific person and get most of your money back. The other person pays the ticket price to receive it.
Market (Resale)
Put your ticket into the public resale pool. Anyone looking for a ticket can find it when event tickets are no longer for sale. You get most of your money back if someone buys it.
The 3 Transfer Types — Explained
Not sure which type is right for you? Here is a simple breakdown.
| Transfer Type | Do you know who gets the ticket? | Does the other person pay? | Do you get money back? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Transfer | Yes, you pick them | No, it's free for them | No |
| Paid Transfer | Yes, you pick them | Yes, they pay the ticket price | Yes (minus a fee) |
| Market Resale | No, anyone can buy it | Yes, they pay the ticket price | Yes (minus a fee) |
Which type will you see?
The transfer buttons that appear on your account depend on how the event is set up:
- The Free Transfer button is almost always available when transfers are open.
- The Paid Transfer button only appears if the event has paid transfers turned on.
- The Ticket Resale button only appears if the event has the resale market turned on.
If you don't see all three options, it just means the event organizers haven't enabled them.
Where to Start
All transfers begin from the Tickets tab on your Account page. Here is how to get there:
-
1
Log in to your account and click Menu, then choose Account.
-
2
Click the Tickets tab at the top of your account page.
-
3
Your primary ticket will appear in a green box. In that box is an expandable 'Ticket Options' accordion. Click to expand the 'Ticket Options' and you will see a Ticket Transfer section with an email field and one or more transfer buttons.
If you purchased additional tickets, scroll down past your primary ticket to the 'Additional Tickets section' to access transfer options for additionally purchased tickets.
The transfer area on your Tickets tab looks like this:
Ticket Transfer
Note: The buttons shown above may differ based on your event settings. You might see only one or two of these options.
Free Transfer
A Free Transfer is the simplest way to give your ticket to someone you know. Think of it like gifting your ticket to a friend. They don't pay anything, and neither do you get anything back. It's totally free for both sides.

Receiving a Transfer
If someone sends a ticket your way, whether it's a free gift, a paid offer, or a resale ticket you found in the market, here is what you need to do to claim it.
You'll get a notification
When a transfer is waiting for you, a blue or yellow notice will appear at the top of any page after you log in. It will say who sent it, what kind of transfer it is, and when the offer expires.
This offer is valid until May 20th, 5:00 pm ET. Visit the Buy a Ticket page to accept the transfer.
How to accept a transfer
-
1
When you see the transfer notification, click the link to go to the Buy a Ticket page (or navigate to it from the menu).
-
2
The page will show you the transfer offer, who it's from, the ticket details, and the expiration time.
-
3
Choose one of two options:
- Accept — For a free transfer, the ticket is added to your account right away at no charge. For a paid or resale transfer, you'll be taken to checkout to pay for it.
- Deny — You decline the offer. The ticket goes back to the original owner's account.
What if I want to refuse the offer?
Just click Refuse Offer on the notification banner. This tells the system you don't want the ticket, and it goes back to the person who sent it. You can also decline from the Buy a Ticket page.
Important Notes
Cooldown Period
After a transfer is completed, the ticket cannot be transferred again right away. There is a short waiting period (called a cooldown) before the new owner can transfer it. This helps prevent tickets from being passed around too quickly.
Minor Tickets Cannot Be Transferred
Tickets registered for children (minors) are not transferable. Only adult tickets can be sent to someone else.
Shifts Are Removed When You Transfer
If you transfer your main (primary) ticket, the system will automatically remove you from any volunteer shifts you were signed up for. Make sure you've talked to your department lead if this applies to you.
The Recipient Must Have an Account
The person receiving a Free or Paid transfer must have an account registered with the email address you enter. If they don't have an account yet, they'll need to create one before they can accept the ticket.
Refunds Go to Your Original Card
For Paid and Market transfers, your refund goes back to the card you originally used to buy the ticket. It can take a few business days to show up in your account.
If the Offer Expires, You Get Your Ticket Back
For all three transfer types, if the recipient doesn't respond in time (or no one buys the resale ticket), your ticket is automatically returned to your account. Nothing is lost, you just try again if you still want to transfer.
